On Lock Sam

The original On Lock Sam was located at 125 East Washington Street between Hunter and El Dorado. It was started by an unknown person in 1898. Wong Sai Chun and two partners bought the existing business in 1920. Wong Sai Chun was from the Kwangtung Province of China. He chose Stockton over the other cities in Central California.

Having dinner at the original On Lock Sam restaurant was quite an awesome experience! It was located in the Skid Row part of town. The restaurant was on the second floor so you had to walk up a fairly long staircase. But it was worth it!

Pioneer Tamale Cafe

To this day, I've never found enchiladas like the turkey enchiladas in that great brown sauce/gravy that the Pioneer served. Also, I remember that there was a super nice lady named Barbara who was always our waitress.

Pollardville

Originally opened in 1944 as the Chicken Kitchen Restaurant. The restaurant moved in 1957 to its current location along Highway 99 between Stockton and Lodi which started the Pollardville complex.

A narrow gauge railroad ran throughout Pollardville, and visitors could ride it for a small fee.

Next door to the Chicken Kitchen Restaurant was the Palace Showboat, a building that looked very much like a riverboat. It was used as a theater. To attract the attention of people on the freeway, there was a giant sign out front, with a chicken up top and a lighted arrow pointing down. A locomotive stood at the base of the sign.

The Pollardville Palace Saloon closed its doors in 2002, and the Chicken Kitchen Restaurant was closed in 2007.

Red Top Burger

Formerly a Foster's Freeze - then became a Red Top Burger. And today since the mid 1970’s it is a Manny's Restaurant.

Risso's

This was a ritzy restaurant with excellent food! We had many wonderful family dinners here and we were always required to dress nicely, I remember that at Easter the restaurant was decorated with little trees that had pretty hanging Easter Eggs.

I recall that we usually celebrated Nana Hansley's birthday dinner here on the 23rd of December. Of course, we would present her with a beautiful corsage to wear!

Stockton Joe's

The first location was at 1503 St. Marks Plaza, then they moved to Lincoln Center. After well over 30 years, Stockton Joe's forever closed on Monday, March 17, 2014.

The restaurant is still there, although now known as “Gongs” and no longer provides any trace of the Hawaiian décor.
